Thunder’s Nikola Topić Begins Chemotherapy for Testicular Cancer
Nikola Topić, the 20-year-old Serbian guard drafted No. 12 overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2024, is undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. The news was confirmed by Thunder general manager Sam Presti, who shared that Topić had undergone a testicular procedure earlier in October 2025 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The biopsy results led to the diagnosis, and Topić requested that the team delay public disclosure until he had begun treatment.
Diagnosis and Treatment Timeline
Topić missed the entire 2024–25 NBA season due to a torn ACL, and his cancer diagnosis adds another layer to his challenging rookie year. Despite the setback, Presti emphasized that doctors are “extremely positive” about his long-term health outlook. Topić has reportedly continued light workouts during treatment, showcasing his resilience and determination.
There is currently no timetable for his NBA debut, and the Thunder organization has made it clear that his health is the top priority. “Our only expectations for him are to focus on this,” Presti said. “He’ll be back playing basketball when he’s able to, but we’re not putting any time length or expectations on that”.

The Thunder have rallied around Topić, offering full support throughout his treatment. Presti praised the young player’s maturity and strength, stating, “He has all the tools that you could ask for somebody to take on and conquer the situation”.
